There was a close call for the 1977-78 NBA scoring title on the final day of the season. George Gervin averaged 26.8 points per game heading into his last games for San Antonio. Among the top scorers was Denver showman David Thompson, who had 26.6 points. In his greatest game of his career, Thompson surpassed Wilt Chamberlain's quarter-time point record. As Gervin took the court later that day, he knew he had to respond with a masterpiece of his own, or else he would lose.
